Fiji Day 6

Last night was a superb romantic evening with Jacqui and I partaking in a dinner for 2 in a Cabana all to ourselves on the edge of the water. We had our own personal butler who looked after us all night. The setting was beautiful and the meal was excellent. It was 5 courses so we were very full by the time we had finished. The highlight of the night was the dessert. It was coconut flavoured ice cream however it was the way it was served that was amazing. Basically, they fill a balloon with water and then hang it in a freezer. When it is 80% frozen, they then take it out of the freezer and cut a hole in one side and tip the unfrozen water out leaving a cavity that can be filled with any dessert of your choice.  Take a look at the photo on this page

The whole time I have been in Fiji all I wanted to do was to have someone take the top off a fresh coconut so I can try the coconut milk and some fresh coconut. Well the Fijian gods must have heard me because this morning when I looked out from the balcony a crowd had gathered below and a Fijian gentleman was in his coconut tree climbing gear getting ready to harvest from fresh coconuts.

The kids and I raced straight down and watched as he lopped coconut after coconut down from the tree before climbing back down. Then with his big machete, he commenced slicing the tops off the coconuts and handing them out. Both the kids tried some however did not like the taste of the juice – I thought it was okay. After trying some, he then cut the coconut in half and manufactured a carving devise from another coconut so I could try the flesh – again not bad.

After that, time was mainly spent by the pool – where we also had lunch served to us. This was followed by a ride on a banana boat which was pretty cool. Talia and I went snorkelling again however visibility was poor whilst Zac and Jacqui continued to relax by the pool.

This evening we are off to a Polynesian Firewalking show and dinner which will be cool and tomorrow we are boarding the “Whale Tale” schooner and doing a sail around some of the other islands that make up Fiji before stopping on a deserted island for lunch and more reef snorkelling.

We decided to do this as my original plan was to go sky diving from 14,000 feet over Fiji. It was all booked in and ready to go only for a last minute cancellation due to the plane needing repairs. Lucky it happened now and not whilst in it I suppose. I am disappointed as I was looking forward to the sky diving even if it was terrifying.

Anyway, will update you tomorrow on both the fire walking and island cruise.

Until then
