Day 7 - Time to go up market
Did you eat all the Taco's???
The photo to the left depicts the taco stack that I received for lunch today. It was a rib eye taco and it was the best taco that I have ever had. They were absolutely "delicioso". In all I think there were 8 individual taco's of which I think I consumed at least 6 they were that good.
Sylvie and Damian took us to this magnificent restaurant in southern Mexico City called Antiguo San Angel Inn. Built in 1692 it was known as the "Hacienda de los Goicochea" and belonged to the Spanish Counts of Pinillas and the Marquise of Selva Nevada prior to it being an old Carmelite monastery . It was refurbished in 1962 and the likes of Muhammad Ali, Robert Kennedy and Prince Philip have all dined there.
I have placed some photo's below of the varying dishes that were served. All looked fantastic and tasted sublime.
Prior to heading for a traditional late lunch (2.30pm), the day started with breakfast at a small cafe around the corner from the apartment followed by a trip to the Sunday art markets held in a local park. This is an opportunity for the local artists to show their talents and sell some of their art. Sylvie and Damian have often bought pieces of art from this market and their apartment walls are covered with some exceptional pieces. We were very tempted to purchase some ourselves as there were some great pieces of artwork and the prices extremely affordable. Given we still have over 30 days to go and 4 countries still to visit, it would be impractical to attempt to take them with us.
Akin to the art stalls are the food stalls where you can purchase everything from fresh fruit through to meat and fish. Given that it was about 24 degrees Celcius and the meat and fish were sitting in the open with little to no ice, it was not exactly the most welcoming site. For those who are interested, the meat choices consisted of ox tongue, ox tail, kidneys, liver and even some trifle (ummm, no thanks).
Mexico City is so full of wonderful little surprises, places to go and things to do that it should be on everyone's agenda to come and visit. It is like any developing country/economy where as long as you are careful where you go and what you do and stay within the safe areas, you will have a wonderful, cultural experience.
